Nobody saw this coming. Liverpool were beaten in the Premier League for the first time since January 2018 as Watford thumped the Reds 3-0 at Vicarage Road to end their hopes of finishing the season as Invincibles. Jurgen Klopp’s side did not know what had hit them as goals from Ismaila Sarr (2) and Troy Deeney did the damage.
The away end bellowed out a rendition of “We’re gunna win the league,” as their side trailed 3-0 but they will be hurting on the way back to Merseyside.
Liverpool are still just four wins from Premier League glory, a position they would have jumped at when the season began.
This team has simply forgotten what it’s like to lose in the Premier League, yet in Hertfordshire they were forced to endure a sobering moment.
It’s the second time they have tasted defeat in two weeks, with Atletico Madrid getting the better of them in the Champions League at the Wanda Metropolitano.
Here they were beaten fair and square by the better team on the day and, take nothing away from Watford, who will now believe they can beat the drop after turning on a performance like that.
Arsenal couldn’t help but poke fun at Liverpool by tweeting “Phew.” from their official account as their 2003/04 team’s status as the Premier League’s only Invincibles was maintained.
They must have been concerned that this Liverpool team, which has moved at a record-breaking trajectory, was about to match their record.
Gary Neville was also keen to jump on social media, posting a video of himself popping the cork from a bottle of champagne.
Jamie Carragher will be keen to remind him that this Liverpool team will still be crowned champions in a matter of weeks.
Across the course of this season Liverpool have earned the nickname ‘Mentality Monsters’.
There have been times when they looked beaten, but somehow they have pulled themselves from the dirt.
Aston Villa was the best example of that in November, when they were trailing the hosts with just three minutes to go.
