Manchester United will reportedly focus on making a midfield signing this month, especially if Nemanja Matic leaves the club. That could open the door for Bruno Fernandes to make the switch to Old Trafford with United keen on the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
The Red Devils were strongly linked with a move for Fernandes during the summer however never submitted a bid.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be keen to strengthen his squad this month, particularly so given the doubts over the future of Matic.
Matic has been linked with a move away from Manchester with Inter Milan believed to be keen.
Reports also suggested that Atletico Madrid offered a swap deal for Matic with Hector Herrera part of that deal.
And transfer expert Duncan Castles reports a departure for Matic would speed up United’s incoming business.
Speaking on the Reach PLC Transfer Window Podcast, Castles said: “What I can tell you now is that Manchester United have decided that they have to recruit in central midfield.
“Whether that’s done in January or the summer remains to be seen but there is a strong possibility that they’ll do it in this window, particularly if Nemanja Matic leaves the club.
“They need to give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at least one more body in what is already a depleted understaffed midfield. Bruno Fernandes is a strong option there.”
Solskjaer is believed to have travelled to Portugal during the week to watch Fernandes.
However he was not giving much away when questioned about a deal for Fernandes or any other transfer business for United.
“We go back to speculations and we do go and watch games all the time,” Solskjaer said.
“When I’ve been and where I’ve been is irrelevant. [Fernandes] is another player in a different club I can’t speak about.
