P40 Pro release: More details about this Huawei phone surface ahead of launch next month

Why are we so certain Huawei is gearing up to unwrap the P40 Pro next month? Well, that’s because the firm’s Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu confirmed as such to French media back in December. More specifically, Yu claimed the launch would take place in Paris towards the end of March.

That sounds pretty accurate, especially as the P30 Pro and P20 Pro were unveiled on March 26 and March 27 in 2019 and 2018 respectively. Both launches also took place in the French capital.

Although the internet has been flooded with leaks, rumours and renders of the P40 Pro ahead of its release, the newest piece of speculation is particularly interesting. According to a new listing from TENAA – a regulator for mobile technology in China – both the P40 and P40 Pro could boast 5G support.

The listing images were captured and posted on Twitter by renowned Huawei leaker RODENT950. The post is most interesting because it suggests both the P40 and P40 Pro may only come with 5G support, meaning there may not be 4G versions of either offered.

As the naming conventions suggest, the P40 is expected to be a more affordable version of the P40 Pro that comes with slightly altered design and less features. If this handset does come with 5G, it could present itself as a compelling upgrade to Android users looking to pick up their first 5G phone without breaking the bank.

Huawei’s previous flagship, the Mate 30 Pro, did come in both 4G and 5G flavours – the latter of which were also treated to some pretty eye-catching vegan leather designs.

Of course, the latest post from TENAA doesn’t confirm the P40 series will only come in 5G flavours. We’ll have to wait until the handset series is unveiled in full before we’ll know for sure.

So what else are we expecting from the P40 Pro? Well, in addition to 5G support, it’s also expected the handset will sport a new design and come with a souped-up camera system.

Renders of the P40 Pro surfaced last month courtesy of Evan Blass – the device was exhibited with a new all-screen display, complete with a pill-shaped cutout à la Galaxy S10+. The panel in question is rumoured to come with a 120Hz refresh rate which, if true, would make the P40 Pro Huawei’s first flagship phone to offer a super smooth experience.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though the P40 Pro will come with Huawei’s curvaceous Horizon Display that debuted on the Mate 30 Pro last year. That’s because the renders from Blass show the handset without extreme curvature on its sides and with volume buttons that aren’t present on Huawei’s 2019 flagship.

That’s not particularly surprising, particularly as Huawei’s Mate series has usually been centred around delivering display improvements and secure facial unlocking while the P-series has usually been treated to some of the most exciting camera upgrades.

It doesn’t look like that precedent is going to change anytime soon. Purported renders of the P40 Pro have shown it with a new rectangular camera module housing five sensors, one of which is anticipated to be a new and improved version of the P30 Pro’s square periscope-style lens.
