Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left feeling rueful after his side’s goalless draw with Wolves on Saturday night. After Chelsea dropped points at Leicester, it was the perfect chance for the Red Devils to make up ground. However, they ended up failing to capitalise on their rivals’ slip-up.
It wasn’t for a lack of trying. United were the better side against Wolves but, unlike the FA Cup clash between the two sides in January, couldn’t find the net.
Bruno Fernandes was impressive, slotting into the side with ease following his arrival from Sporting Lisbon.
Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof stood out, too, while Fred continued his resurgence with a slick showing in the middle of the park.
However, three United players disappointed against Wolves and have been struggling, now, for some time.
Anthony Martial and Raul Jimenez gave two contrasting performances at Old Trafford.
The Wolves star was a threat, testing David De Gea on occasions and giving Lindelof and Maguire a tough afternoon.
Martial, however, toiled.
He was given the No 9 shirt at the start of the campaign but has now managed just two goals from his last nine matches across all competitions.
The France international has talent but not the ruthless streak that United want, hence why they’ve now landed Odion Ighalo.
Simply not good enough.
The United star has been given plenty of opportunities this season following the exits of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini last year.
But the Brazil international made little impact throughout the game at Old Trafford.
His poor display actually saw Fernandes take on more responsibility than the Portugal international needed.
